jay deb talks about contrived
Hi Jay, it's nice to have you here. Thanks for taking time to tell us about you and your new book. It's your debut novel,
Thanks for having me Shawn. Yes, CONTRIVED is my debut novel. I work as an IT developer for a big bank. But writing is my passion, which I have done throughout my adult life.
What has the experience been like?
Writing has been a great experience, though tiring at times, more so as my regular IT job often requires 9 to 12 hour days. After I started writing CONTRIVED there was no going back. The story simply sprawled itself and before I knew it was 86000 words long. Writing this novel often made me feel powerful. With a few strokes on the keyboard, I could send someone to Harvard or to jail.
I see that Contrived hasn't had any Amazon reviews yet. Are you like me, holding your breath while waiting for that first rating, wondering what it will be?
Yes, to date CONTRIVED does not have a review at amazon.com. I am waiting for that elusive, honest reviewer to pour his/her heart out and point the flaws and deficiencies in my writing.
Tell us about yourself.
I grew up in India and came to this great country with an American when I was twenty-eight. I started with an IT developer job and I still work in the same field. It was my childhood dream to be a writer. I wrote poetries from time to time and sent them to competitions and put them on my blog site. I also wrote several articles at ezinearticles.com and hubpages.com. Early this year I started writing my first novel CONTRIVED. It was complete in July. After editing, it was finally published in September.
Are you working on anything else yet?
I am working on a new crime thriller, named REVENGE. This one involves a CIA agent, NY based mafia and two senetors.
Do you plan on staying in the genre of Contrived, or will you be branching out into other genres as well?
I plan on staying with the same genre, crime thriller. Right now I cannot think of writing anything, though my son keeps urging me to write Science Fiction or mythological stories. I have no clue how to write those types of books.
Who are your favorite authors?
Robert Ludlum, Vince Flynn and James Patterson are the best to me. I also like Nelson DeMille, Sydney Sheldon, Jodi Picoult, Dan Brown, Stephen King, John Grisham, Mario Puzo, Forsyth, Brad Thor, Ryan Winfield and many others.
What are some of your favorite books?
Bourne Identity was the best book I ever read. Godfather was second. Other favorite books are, Third Option by Flynn, Day of the Jackal, Doomsday Conspiracy, Da Vinci Code, The Firm, Kill me if you can by Patterson, South of Bixby Bridge by R Winfield.
What has been some of the frustrations with getting Contrived published? What have you learned in the process?
Publishing was not that much frustrating to me. I sent query letters to 25 agents. As expected there was no positive response. Then I self published at amazon. I plan on publishing CONTRIVED at Smashwords in December.
When do you typically get to write and what is your ideal setting for tapping into that vein of creativity?
I normally write after 11 pm when my wife and son are asleep. Currently I take an hour long train ride to work. Many times I write snippets in the train. My other favorite place is Starbucks.
Your story sounds very intriguing, what inspired it?
During the year 98-99 I used to day trade stocks. Then I wondered how nice it would be to trade stocks for a living. This was a fantasy that spread in my head over years. Some of my novel is based on it. But all the murders and most villains were added while writing it.
What is your method of writing? Do you formulate an outline first, or do you just write wherever the story takes you?
Formulate. My method is write down the skeleton of the story in the first draft then add subplot, prose, maybe a new character during next drafts.
Can you tell us about your poetry?
Poetry is something that I always wrote throughout the years and I thought I would write only poetry. But I thought they were not good enough, at least not good enough to be published as a book.
How can people get in touch with you and learn more about you and Contrived?

Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?
My book CONTRIVED became somewhat a mixed genre book with crimes and family stories running along with it. My next novel REVENGE will be purely a crime thriller with spy and politics injected into it.
Well, good luck, Jay! I wish you all the success! Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks for having me.
